About Coach
Akira
Born in Cambridge, England, Akira's earliest memories revolve around soccer, from kicking a ball with his dad at the university grounds to playing on a preschool team. His love for the game flourished as he joined neighborhood friends for pick-up games in Japan. After attending elementary school in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, he moved to Hershey, PA, and finally settled in Bellevue, WA, in fifth grade. During his formative years, Akira played for Eastside FC from U12 through U18, honing his skills and deepening his passion for the sport. He later graduated from the University of Washington with a BA in Mathematics and a minor in Statistics, blending his academic pursuits with his love for soccer.
Akira's coaching journey began in 2022 when he took on the role of head coach for the Boys High School C team at Interlake High School. Inspired by the coaches who shaped his playing career, Akira believes that soccer is the ultimate team sport. He emphasizes that success on the field comes from cohesive teamwork, with players working together in both defense and attack, each understanding and fulfilling their roles. His coaching philosophy focuses on fostering collaboration and resilience, aiming to develop not only skilled players but also strong teammates.
Beyond his coaching duties, Akira is deeply connected to the soccer community. He has two younger brothers who also played at Eastside FC, creating a family legacy within the sport. In addition to coaching, he plays men’s league soccer for a team called Samurai FC, which consists of Japanese Americans, international students, and professionals in the Seattle area. Through this team, Akira strives to connect the Japanese community, using their shared passion for soccer as a bridge to foster friendships and cultural ties within the greater Seattle area.
