(July 19, 2016) It's a harbinger of the summer youth soccer tournament season in full swing when Eastside FC teams migrate southward to the Golden State in search of high-level competition as they prepare for the fall soccer season here at home. This weekend, a handful of Eastside FC teams made the trek to San Diego for the 2016 Albion Cup, hosted by partner club Albion SC, and two are bringing home some serious hardware as souvenirs of their 3-day California adventure.
Eastside FC G06 Red, coached by Anderson Prestes, claimed the GU11 Albion Cup Championship title on their first out-of-state trip for soccer. The girls emerged from an exceptionally strong bracket, playing three southern California teams, Strikers FC, Legends FC and Albion SC. "We had two very convincing wins and one loss in bracket play," said Coach Prestes. Their 2-1 record earned them a berth in the playoff rounds, facing two Hawaiin teams: Hoku Ala in the semis and HSC Bulls in the finals. "Both matches were close: the girls won the semifinal on pks after a 3-3 tie at the end of regulation; the final was a nailbiter," contnued Prestes. "The final was very intense with both teams playing an attacking minded game that drew 4-4 at the end of regulation. The game went to extra time when we scored to make it 5-4 and win with the golden goal. We scored a total of 22 goals in 5 games."
"I am very proud of this very talented group," Prestes added. "The girls had a lot of fun spending time with each other this weekend and helping the team to achieve the success they have been working hard for. I am very pleased with their development collectively and individually. A very young group and yet so focused and determined to enjoy the experience of playing soccer!"
Eastside FC B01 White, coached by Alex Silva, hoisted the BU16 championship trophy. The boys beat three California teams, including home team Albion SC B01 Premier, to glide into the semifinals as one of two undefeated teams in the age group. The other undefeated team, Arsenal FC - S B2001, couldn't make it past EFC in the semifinals, falling in pks to our boys in blue, who went on to face RSF Attack Academy 2, also from Califonia, for the title. Eastside FC's attack was well honed by the third day of the tournament; the team put a stunning 5 goals into the record book, while the defense shut out its opponents, in the championship match.
The EFC B01 White team won the BU16 Copa Division of the Rainier Challenge, closer to home, which wrapped up on June 26th, where they also went undefeated and shut out their opponents by a wide margin (4-0) in the final match.
"The boys did a fantastic job from the beginning to the end," said Coach Silva of the results in San Diego. "I'm proud of each of them for playing so well. They fought hard through each game, played with passion, and gave it all they had. Even when the games got difficult, they were able to regain their focus. They never lost site of their goal. I'm so proud of them; they truly deserve to be champions!"
Three other Eastside FC teams emerged from bracket play, earning a spot in their age groups' semifinals: Eastside FC B02 White at BU15, Eastside FC B00 White at BU17 (pictured above) and Eastside FC G03 White at GU14.
