(May 9, 2016) It was deja vu all over again -- and again -- for Eastisde FC's G98 Red, coached by Tom Bialek, as the team claimed its third Washington State Championship Cup, on another Mothers' Day weekend, this time in the Girls U17 division. The girls' State Cup journey was impressive: they found the back of the net 28 times, and allowed only 4 goals during their 6 tournament matches. Two EFC players shared Top Goal Scorer honors in the GU17 division with five goals apiece: Joanna Harber and Olivia Van Der Jagt.
"It was a very challenging weekend that required the whole team to dig down really deep. I was very proud of how the girls persevered and found a way to get it done. Both of our opponents this weekend played with a lot of determination," said Coach Bialek. "It was a team effort and all the players contributed to the result."
The U17 girls had already earned a berth into the 2016 Region IV Championships with their first place finish in the Far West Regional League (FWRL) Northwest Division; in fact this will be their fourth trip with Coach Bialek to Regionals. Twice they made it into the National Championships: they were crowned GU14 National Champions after their first trip in 2013, and placed third in 2014. The GU17s, in fact, remain undefeated this year in league and State Cup action, having finished on top as 2016 Regional Club League GU19 Div 1 Champions, 2016 Far West Regional League (FWRL) NW GU17 Champions, and now officially 2016 GU17 Washington State Champions.
Eastside FC's G99 White, coached by Porter Lombard, also hoisted a championship trophy this weekend after winning the GU16 Division 1 title of the Washington Youth Soccer Presidents Cup. The girls blazed through the Cup after finishing on top of Regional Club League's GU16 second division. They won all five matches of the tournament, scoring 12, while allowing only 2 goals, and defeating Crossfire G99 B 2-1 in the final on Sunday at Starfire.
According to Coach Lombard, "This was our third try at this for both State Cup and Regionals; last year we were semifinalists, and we were finalists the year before for both. We are excited to go back to Regionals, this time to Colorado. Then, this group is traveling to Sweden this summer to compete in the Gothia Cup! " Lombard adds a heartfelt "Thanks to a great group of players and their supportive parents." The girls made it as far as the finals in California in the Region IV Championships in June, 2014, and have their sights set on making it to the next level with this new opportunity.
