(May 3, 2016) It doesn't get much better than this, at least for two Eastside FC teams who punched tickets to Regionals after winning championships in Washington Youth Soccer state cup tournaments this weekend. Between the Washington State Championships and Presidents Cup, sixteen Eastside FC teams found their way to the quarter-finals or beyond in the U12 to U14 age groups; eight made the semifinal matches on Saturday; three made the finals on Sunday; and two remained undefeated for the weekend to earn the privilege to bring home a state cup trophy.
The boys of Eastside FC B01 Red, coached by Dan Strom, started their run in the BU14 2016 US Youth Soccer Washington State Championships with a loss, but still were able to emerge on top of their bracket, second in points in the age group overalll. In fact, after their slow start they played inspired, winning five straight, scoring thirteen and allowing only three goals against. Their secret? "The EFC Boys 01 Red won their first state cup title in part by committing themselves to training three times a week for the five weeks of the state cup run. That extra work on the ball, in building cohesion and level of fitness paid off in their back-to-back games this past weekend," said Coach Strom. 'These boys played hard for each other, and in this event, their team chemistry and running for each other gave them the needed edge to beat Crossfire 3-1 in the championship game, a team they had not defeated since their U12 season," he explained, before adding, "A great group of dedicated athletes and nice guys who will go for it again in Boise at the Far West Regional. Super proud of them!" The Region IV Championships take place June 20-26 in Idaho.
The girls of Eastside FC's G01 White team, coached by Jan Smisek, made great strides all year, including their surprising run into the post-season to take the GU14 Division 1 championship in the Presidents Cup. The team wrapped up its Regional Club League (RCL) season at the top of Division 3 as 2015 came to a close, and then moved up to play RCL's Division 2 for the winter 2016 season, amongst the same teams it would face in the Presidents Cup. In the winter season, the team finished in the middle of the pack; but the girls were making the adjustment, improving each match, gaining momentum. In the tournament, the G01 White team sneaked into the quarterfinals after a three-way tie-breaker determined which teams earned the final two slots. From then on, the girls were on a roll, making six goals and allowing only two combined in their final three matches of the season. Three of those goals came in the championship against a stunned PacNW G01 Blue, which fell 3-1. Now, the EFC U14s are headed to the Presidents Cup Regional Championships June 14-19 in Arvada, Colorado.
After getting past strong Seattle United and PacNW sides in the quarter- and semifinals, Eastside FC G02 White, coached by Lauren Martin, made it to the finals in the Presidents Cup GU13 first division, where they fell just shy with a final scoreline of 1-0 to wrap up their 2015-2016 season.
