(April 18, 2016) 1...2...3. This year makes three incredible, consecutive championships -- 2013, 2014, and now 2015 -- in the Far West Regional League (FWRL) Northwest Division for Eastside FC G99 Red, coached by Lance Fischbach. And, this year it's a first for EFC G98 Red, coached by Tom Bialek. The two girls' teams will be joining EFC B98 Red, BU17 Champions, at the US Youth Soccer Region IV Championships this June in Boise, Idaho.
Fischbach's G99s battled their way through an 8-team bracket, which included tough Washington and Oregon sides, with a 5-1-1 overall record. "We clinched the berth on the last day and last game of the FWRL in Oregon. We won 3-2 the day after our only loss and after having several players go down with injury," explained Fischbach. In fact, the win gave them the three points they needed to tie their Northwest Nationals counterparts with 16 points; and ultimately win the tiebreaker based on goal differential for the GU16 title.
Although the EFC G98 Red team won its first FWRL title this year, the girls are no strangers to the Regional Championships; in fact this will be their fourth trip with Coach Bialek, including their 2013 journey, which put them on their way to the GU14 USYS National Championship title a month later. In this year's FWRL, Bialek's team finished undefeated, winning six straight and earned a maximum 19 points, solidly ahead of the second-place 3RSC team by 5 points.
Both teams wrapped up their FWRL play at the end of February. The Far West Regional League Northwest Division is open to teams from Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, Wyoming and British Columbia. USYS Regional Championships take place June 20-26, 2016, in Boise. Winners meet up with USYS National League winners at the USYS National Championships, which run July 25-30 in Frisco, Texas.
